Rolf Method: Treatments

With chronic pain, postural or movement difficulties, a series of 10 rolf method treatments is recommended which systematically works through the entire body, addressing the different layers of adaptations that have occurred, and rebalancing the body from the feet up (see below for a more detailed explanation). Commitment is required for best results, ideally with a treatment a week over a 10 week period.

Rolf Method Recommendation:

Rolf Method is appropriate for those with:

  • Chronic pain or movement issues that other health treatments have been unsuccessful in helping

  • Sports folk wishing to improve performance through better alignment and posture

  • Anyone over the age of 40 wanting an M.O.T for the next part of their lives

Types of Rolfing Sessions

3 Sessions

This is a mini balance, and is recommended for less chronic problems. It addresses the lower girdle (legs and hips), upper girdle (shoulders, neck and arms), and integrates the two with a balanced spine.

Individual Sessions

These are recommended to address specific muscular issues, movement difficulties or areas of pain; or to see if Rolfing Structural Integration is for you.

Why 10 Treatments?

Ida Rolf, the originator of Structural Integration, was aware that diagnosis and lasting treatment of a specific symptom of muscular dysfunction or pain is very difficult. This is because all body parts relate synergistically to each other, and different injuries accumulated over time along with habitual postures create layers of adaptation patterns. This fact means that effectively treating the body in one go is impossible.

Consequently Dr Rolf came up with a series of ten treatments that progressively addresses these layers of adaptations, bringing the body into improved organization. Each session builds up on the results of the previous one

  • BREATHING

Releasing arm tension, decompensating the shoulder girdle from the spine, and increasing breathing capacity by releasing restrictions on the chest.

  • FEET - THE FOUNDATION

Activating the muscles of the calf that are responsible for the arches and movement, releasing plantar fascia, lengthening the achilles, so there is more evenness in the foot hinge and improving the foots alignment to the knee. Many knee, hip and back problems arise from the feet.

  • FEELING THE VERTICAL LINE

Relating the front to the back, further work on the shoulder girdle, and aligning the pelvis with the shoulders above and the legs below

  • INTERNAL CORE SUPPORT

Working the inside line of the leg, from the foot up to the pelvis, an important basis for pelvic stability

  • CORE STABALIZATIION

Working the core, and balancing the rectus abdominus with the psoas. The psoas is the master muscle, which spans the whole lumbar, helping stabilize it, as well as flex the hip. Large nerve plexuses are embedded in the psoas, and improved psoas function leads to better physiological health

  • HIPS AND BACK

Working the hips, the back line from the achilles up to the sacrum, and the external rotators. This restores evenness of the hips relative to the spine.

  • HEAD AND NECK

Balancing the head relative to the shoulders, improving the alignment of the cervical vertebrae and functionality of the inner neck muscles. Releasing the trapesius, shoulder raising muscles, and restoring neck movement.

  • INTEGRATION AND BALANCING

The major segments of the body are brought together in an integrated state such that the shoulder and hip girdles can act independently of a functional spine.
